The Space Between
Space is nothing, except it’s everything. Space within itself is worth nothing, but it’s priceless.
Space is nothing, except it’s everything. Space within itself is worth nothing, but it’s priceless. Space is not something that you see or feel, but it’s there. I’m not just talking about the universe, well I kind of am, but not entirely.
I was with a friend of mine, Gregg Meyer … We were talking about this while I was out visiting him in Santa Fe where he lives. We had some meetings and a few other work items to get done, but needless to say, we enjoy hanging out, so we did. Hiking, dinner etc…He’s a wealth of knowledge so it’s nice to get an IQ bump. :) Here’s the thing, Gregg has an airplane, so naturally, we went flying. This is when the discussion started about space. He said, “you can’t see lift on an airplane, or drag or a wind sheer, but you know it’s there.” I said like space. The conversation went something like that. Can’t remember exactly because I was focusing on enjoying the flying part.
The conversation made me think about something. What’s holding us back from success or being happy may not be something you see. And at the same time I was thinking about this, I thought about space. Like a room. Just an empty room. We don’t appreciate just the space itself. The emptiness of the room. We only care about the stuff in the room, but not the room itself. It’s just a place to put stuff right? We take it for granted. We take the space itself for granted. Just like lift on an airplane. We take it for granted, but without it, you’ll just fall out of the sky. Without the emptiness of that room, you can’t fill it. You have to have the emptiness.
Check out these two definitions of “space.”
space
/spās/
noun
1.
a continuous area or expanse which is free, available, or unoccupied.
2.
the dimensions of height, depth, and width within which all things exist and move.
“In which all things exist and move.”
So without space, you have nothingness. Literally nothing. No time. No space.
Two lessons I took away from the conversation. One is space is no one thing, it’s everything. And just because you can’t see drag or what’s holding you back, doesn’t mean it’s not there. You have to acknowledge the drag to do something about it. You have to understand that it’s there in order to get rid of it.
One last thing; ok three things… appreciate the emptiness. Appreciate the space. Appreciate quiet. Appreciate the empty room. Appreciate the silence in a conversation. Appreciate that space is just that, space. After all, it’s where the building begins.
Gregg did a great job landing. Appreciate you my friend.
